>> NUS Wireless
Venturing Forum
Our centre launched an inaugural event
for the forum, a Wireless Venture CEOs Roundtable on
7 February 2003 at NUS Guild House to promote the development
of the wireless entrepreneurial community in Singapore.
We were pleased to have close to 20 CEOs across different
segments of the wireless industry, from mobile payment,
location-based services, wireless LAN and applications,
mobile middleware, SMS services and wireless chipset
manufacturer as well as mobile venture VC joining us
in this forum and making it a successful one.
A follow up public event on Venturing Opportunities
in the Location Based Services (LBS) marketplace will
be held on 26 March at NUS Hon Sui Sen Auditorium in
collaboration with IDA. The event will feature
a wireless users forum discussion facilitated by Singapore
Computer Society, LBS Value Chain discussion facilitated
by WirelessWorld, LBS startups elevator pitches, local
and overseas case studies, and examination of the consumer
and corporate LBS markets.

>> NUS-IES Technopreneurship
Workshop on 24 & 25 April 2003
As part of the new collaboration MOU
on technology entrepreneurship signed between NUS and
the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES), we are
pleased to announce the joint organization of the first
Technopreneurship Workshop on 24 & 25
April aimed at equipping working professionals
with the necessary skills and knowledge to start new
high-tech ventures.
This is a 2-day intensive programme
covering all essential areas of starting up a business,
including Defining the Entrepreneurial Opportunity,
Market and Competitor Analysis, Intellectual Property
Protection and Start-up Legal Issues, Business Strategy
Formulation, Building the Team and Organizing for Execution,
Financial Projection and Fund Raising Strategy, and
Business Plan Writing and Presentation Techniques.
The "hands-on, real-life"
workshops will bring participants through the full-cycle
of transforming ideas into a complete, "actionable"
business plan; ending with an opportunity to practice
an "elevator pitch" to potential VCs and Angel
Investors.

Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education (REE) Asia
2003 in Singapore
The inaugural Roundtable on Entrepreneurship
Education (REE) Asia Conference 2003 will be held in
Singapore from 30 July to 1 August at the NUS Guild
House, National University of Singapore. This event
is co-organized by NUS
Entrepreneurship Centre, Stanford
Technology Ventures Program (STVP) of Stanford University
and Lester
Center for Entrepreneurship & Management of Technology
Program, University of California Berkeley.
This annual conference, previously known as Roundtable
on Entrepreneurship Education for Engineers (REEE),
had been organized in the US at Stanford University
since 1999, and the first European REEE was held in
London in 2001. NUS Entrepreneurship Centre is pleased
to host the first REE in Asia. The conference is designed
to gather the entrepreneurship
program/centre directors of leading universities in
Asia to share best practice and latest pedagogical advances
in
entrepreneurship education for scientists and engineers.
Participation in the conference will be by invitation
only. The
conference includes a formal program and interactive
workshops, as well as many opportunities for informal
discussions and networking with technology entrepreneurship
educational leaders and scholars from leading universities
in Asia .
>> Upcoming Events
for Start-Up@Singapore (S@S)
Startup@Singapore
is entering the next phase with the end of the executive
summary submission on 19 February. An
overwhelming response of 230 teams
submitted their business plans.
There will be a semi-final bootcamp featuring business
plan, marketing and financial workshops, On-The-Firing-Line
with expert
opinions for participants from prominent
VCs, elevator pitches from startups in the HOTSpots
community (www.singaporehotspots.com),
individual team coaching by mentors as well as networking
lunch & dinner.

Recent Research Working Papers
NUS Entrepreneurship Centre has continued
to expand our research on key aspects of technology
entrepreneurship.
>> "Innovation for The New Era" by NUS
Enterprise Leadership Forum, in conjunction with IBM
Eminent Speaker Series
NUS Enterprise Leadership Forum, in
conjunction with IBM Eminent Speaker Series, is presenting
a forum entitled "Innovation for the New Era"
by Mr. Nicholas Donofrio, Senior Vice President, Technology
& Manufacturing, IBM Corporation. The forum will
be held on 19 March 2003, 10am, at Lecture Theatre 27,
National University of Singapore.
This event will also mark the first
of the IBM Eminent Speaker Series that is designed to
provide an interactive platform for collaborative exchange
of ideas between the technology industry and the IHL
community, on different business and technology issues.
This event is supported by NUS Entrepreneurship Centre
and NUS Venture Support.
Nicholas Donofrio is the Senior Vice
President of IBM's technology strategy worldwide. Besides
being instrumental in IBM achieving its current international
standing, he is also the driving force behind technologies
such as "Deep Blue" and "Blue Gene".
Nick will be speaking on the confluence
of Information Technology and Biology - exploring the
principles of how ecological systems organise, and the
application of these principles in the world of computing
systems

Our Past Activities in January
& February 2003
The month of January and February have
been an eventful one, as we have successfully organized
several events:
>>
NUS-IES MOU Signing Ceremony
On 19 February, NUS through its Entrepreneurship
Centre had agreed to ink a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) with the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES)
to launch a major collaboration initiative between NUS
and IES on technology entrepreneurship at The Vista,
NUS University Hall. The MOU signing ceremony also involved
the Presidents of NUS and IES as well as over 80 invited
guests from NUS, IES, Economic Development Board (EDB),
industries and media.
We were also pleased to have Mr. Teo
Ming Kian, Chairman of EDB, to be the Guest-of-Honour
for the MOU signing ceremony.

Distinguished Technology Management Speaker Seminar
With the inking of the MOU between NUS
and IES on 19 February, we also organized the first
series of the joint seminar by Mr. Seah Moon Ming, President
of Singapore Technologies Electronics Ltd on "R&D
Management & Strategies" at NUS Engineering
Auditorium on the same day (19 February) from 11.30am
to 12.35pm.

Entrepreneurship Research Seminar
A half-day Seminar on "Business
Incubators" was organized on 10 February. We were
pleased to have Prof. Pier A. Abetti, Professor, Management
of Technology and Entrepreneurship of Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (RPI), Troy, NY USA to present his research
findings on "University-Based New Business Incubators
in USA and Finland: Infrastructure, Results and Best
Practices" . His presentation was followed by a
lively panel discussion on Incubators in Singapore .
the panel was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Wong Poh Kam,
director of NUS Entrepreneurship and involved the following
invited panel members besides Prof. Abetti: Mr. David
Lim, Deputy Director of NUS Venture Support, Prof. Yeong
Hin Yuen, Director of Innovation & Technology Tran\Innovation
& Technology Transfer Office, NTU and Mr. Chew Mun
Hou, CEO of iAxil Pte Ltd .
>>Techno-Venture
Forum
Through this forum, we invite prominent
speakers to share their venturing experience and insights
with the NUS community as well as the public. In January
and February, we organized three forums:

StartUp@Singapore (S@S) Business Plan Forums and Roadshows
in January
There were 9 S@S Business Plan Road
Shows and Forums being organized in the month of January
2003; where we invited prominent entrepreneurs and technopreneurs,
industry and business leaders, VCs, and consultants
to share about the different aspects of entrepreneurship.
The forums and roadshows attracted over 1500 participants,
and were held successfully at NTU, Singapore Poly, Science
Park, NUS and Southeast CDC. We are pleased to see continually
strong interests of entrepreneurship amongst tertiary
students, working professionals, research scientists
and engineers at RICs, heartlanders and even students
as young as JCs and secondary schools who came in trove
to our events.

We are pleased to learn that two NUS
Law Graduates have recently started an IP consulting
services company called Intelleigen
Pte Ltd and they have been doing well in the industry.
Intelleigen is a consulting organization that helps
businesses identify, manage and protect their intellectual
assets and intellectual property for maximum returns.
Their global IP consulting offers clients one stop for
all their intellectual property needs.
Mr.
Chee Chun Woei, Founder & CEO of Intelleigen
is an acknowledged expert in intellectual property rights
protection and has pioneered some of the most aggressive
practices in Asia for the movie, music and software
industries.
Mr.
Wong Taur-Jiun, COO and co-founder of Intelleigen.
Prior to founding Intelleigen with Chun Woei, he was
a licensing and corporate lawyer for various multinational
companies. His transactional experience extended to
all the major economies of the Asia Pacific, including
China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore,
South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
