On 14 November 2002 (Thursday), NUS Centre for Entrepreneurship (CET) is holding a Special Seminar cum Press Release
on our research findings for the "Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2002 Project: Benchmarking of Entrepreneurial Development in Singapore" at the National University of Singapore, Lecture Theatre 31 (LT 31) of Science Faculty from 8.30am to 11.00am.

** To start the day, we are holding a half-day Research Seminar on "Technology Entrepreneurship" from 9.00am - 12.30pm
at Conference Room A (CRA), Level 4, NUS Business School (BIZ1). We are pleased to have Prof. Sankaran
Venkataraman from the Darden Business School, University of Virginia to be one of our speakers as well as Dr. Foo Maw
Der from NUS Business School and Ms Zhang Jing (doctoral student) to share their latest research insights on Technology
Entrepreneurship.

What is Start-Up@Singapore?
Start-Up@Singapore
is a national business plan competition and forum organised by the National University of
Singapore-Centre for Entrepreneurship (CET) and Business School Alumni Association. Firstly launched in 1999, the
Start-Up@Singapore competition and forum is now into its 4th year and to start the ball rolling for this year 2002, we will
have a kick-off event on 29 November 2002 with a series of talks from prominent speakers and entrepreneurs as well as

The month of October has been an eventful one for CET as we successfully organized several events:

>> Executive Training Program
A joint NUS-CET - WIPO Training Program on "For Asia and the Pacific on the Use of the Intellectual Property System
for Enhancing Enterprise Competitiveness and Growth" from 14 to 22 October at The M Hotel in Singapore. The training
program was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Republic of Singapore and World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Participants include 22 senior policy makers from 21 developing countries.


>> Entrepreneurship Research Seminar
* A half-day Seminar on "University Technology Commercialization and Spin-offs" on 31 October featuring a
presentation by Prof. Scott Shane (Chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship at the Robert H. School of Business
at the University of Maryland) on "Universities and High Technology Entrepreneurship" and Assoc. Prof. Wong Poh
Kam, Director of Centre for Entrepreneurship, NUS on "Technology Commercialization and Spin-offs: A Comparative
study of Leading Asian vs. North American Universities".

* Prof. Scott Shane, Chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship at the Robert H. School of Business at the
University of Maryland and also a visiting professor at CET gave a talk on "Does Business Planning Facilitate the
Development of New Ventures?" on 29 October.

* A Research Seminar jointly organized by CET and the Department of Decision Sciences, NUS Business School on
9 October, featuring a talk by Assistant Professor David Hsu from the Entrepreneurial Management Group of
the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania on "What Do Entrepreneurs Pay for Venture Capital
Affiliation?"

>> Techno-Venture Forum
* Techno-Venture Forum on "Making Merger and Acquisition work: A case Study of ECS Holdings" by Mr. Ng Hock
Ching, Co-founder of Natsteel Electronics and ECS Holdings and also an Adjunct Associate Professor of CET, NUS
on 16 October.

* Techno-Venture Forum on "Growth Strategies for High Tech Startups in Asia" by Mr. Joshua Koh, Chairman and Co-
founder of Transcend eBusiness Pte Ltd on 9 October.

Besides the events above, our centre also hosted a visit by senior Science and Technology policy makers from the National Institute for Science and Tech Policy (NISPASS), Vietnam on 28 October, who were interested in learning more about the Entrepreneurship and innovation management research program at CET.

The Minor in Technopreneurship Programme for Undergraduate Students is once again offered in Semester 2, Academic Year
2002/2003, i.e. Jan 2003. Students who are interested may begin to apply for the Minor in Technopreneurship.
Completed application form must be submitted to our Centre by 2 Dec 2002, 4.30pm.
