Composition

Composition applicants are required to submit a portfolio of 3-5 original scores written for different combinations of instruments/voices (for example, piano trios, strings quartets, large ensembles, etc.). Submission of recordings on compact disc is greatly encouraged. Please note that music arrangements or popular genres will not be considered and application materials and scores will not be returned to applicants.

Applicants residing in Singapore who meet the audition requirements will be shortlisted for an interview during the audition week. At the interview, applicants should be able to discuss their influences and musical interests in relation to the field of composition. International applicants may be contacted via telephone for the interview.

Unaccompanied Bach: an Adagio and Fugue or three movements of a Partita

The 1st or 2nd & 3rd movement of a concerto from the standard repertoire

Two contrasting movements of unaccompanied Bach, or one unaccompanied work.

One movement from a standard sonata
(example: Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Shostakovich), or comparable work

One movement from Bartok, Walton, Hindemith concertos or a virtuoso movement from a standard classical concerto.

Short study piece (to be given to candidate before audition).

Trumpet

A movement or part of a concerto, sonata that will demonstrate your technique and articulation (accompaniment preferred).

A slow piece of your choice that will demonstrate your tone and muscianship (unaccompanied acceptable).

Three contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice.

Short study piece (to be given to candidate before audition).

Trombone

Tuba

A legato styled etude such as a Bordogni or Concone etude i.e: "Rochut Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Book 1, Etude No. 2."

A selection of two orchestral excerpts for tuba from the standard orchestral repertoire such as Richard Wagner’s "Prelude to Die Meistersinger" or "Ride of the Valkyries."

A solo of the applicant's choice

Snare drum

Keyboard

Recording Arts and Science

Candidates are required to perform a repertoire of at least 10 minutes consisting of at least two contrasting pieces, movements from compositions, or songs of their own choice using any musical instruments. Any style, genre, or period is permissible. Candidates with composition background may also choose to present a portfolio of at least 2 original scores written for different combinations of instruments/voices (for example, piano trios, strings quartets, large ensembles, etc). Submission of recordings on compact disc is encouraged.

Candidates with past experience in recording work are welcome to present a portfolio of their pre-recorded projects.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate an aptitude and ability in musical concepts and materials.

Voice

1. 1 Song or Aria in English
2. 1 Song or Aria in Italian
3. 1 Song or Aria in German or French
4. 1 Song or Aria in your native language

The examination may also include sight-reading a short musical excerpt. The four selections above should encompass a variety of music styles and periods and demonstrate your current vocal ability as well as your potential. All selections should be age-appropriate. Students are not required to sing an aria, but if they choose to do so, only one aria may be presented and the remaining selections must be art songs. All selections must be sung in their original language (no translations) and from memory.

Piano

(for Bachelor of Music Degree Programme)
Applicants are required to perform one selection from each of the following five groups:

  • One Etude by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Scriabin, Bartok, Stravinsky, Moszkowski, Prokofiev, Ligeti or Bolcom.
  • Any Prelude & Fugue chosen from the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach
  • A complete Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or Clementi
  • A major work from the Romantic period*
  • A representative work from the 20th century to the present*

No exceptions or substitutions will be permitted for the above requirements.

All audition repertoire must be performed from memory. No concerti or transcriptions are permitted. The applicant may be asked to play scales and arpeggios, and the examination may also include sight-reading of a short musical excerpt. Any remaining questions regarding repertoire can be addressed to the Head of Piano Studies At the time of the audition, applicants will be asked to submit a list of works studied within the last three years to the audition panel.

(for Graduate Diploma in Piano Performance)
Applicants should prepare a 60-minute, memorized recital program offering contrasting styles from at least three different periods, and including a complete sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or Clementi. No concerti are permitted. Candidates are also asked to submit a list of the works studied within the past four years to the audition panel. The repertoire list should be presented to the conservatory piano faculty at the time of the audition.

Any questions or concerns regarding audition repertoire can be addressed to the Head of Piano Studies.

(for Graduate Diploma in Two Piano Performance)
Audition for this program is by invitation only. Interested duo teams should prepare a memorized program of three contrasting works. No concerti are permitted. Candidates are also asked to submit a list of the solo and ensemble works studied within the past four years to the audition panel. The repertoire list should be presented to the conservatory piano faculty at the time of the audition.

This program is designed for those whose BMus programmes included intense focus on one piano four hands and/or two piano performance, and whose career aspirations clearly warrant further professional training in the area of piano ensemble arts.

Any questions or concerns regarding audition repertoire can be addressed to the Head of Piano Studies.

No exceptions or substitutions will be permitted for the above requirements.
