DEPARTMENT STUDIES

THE COMPOSITION DEPARTMENT
The composition programme offers students exposure to a range of compositional approaches that allows them to develop technical skills to begin expressing their individual artistic voices. Through weekly individual lessons and studio classes, students undertake an extensive series of composition projects - from short solo works in the first semester of study to longer works for large ensemble in their last year - that enable them to develop a facility with compositional materials, and are encouraged to explore writing for traditional, folk and other instruments and ensembles available in the region.

The programme recognizes music technology as an integral component of contemporary music making and is integrated into the curriculum from the very beginning. Computer-based music scoring, recording, and production tools and skills are introduced in the first year while computer music composition, synthesis, signal processing, and interactive techniques are covered in year two. The Music Technology Lab and Computer Music Studio facilities provide workstations for students working on composition, scoring and related projects. Software includes Finale, Pro Tools LE, Peak Pro, Max/MSP/Jitter, Csound, Tassman Studio, Reason/Recycle, Cubase, SuperCollider, Ableton Live, SoundHack, and Audacity.

There are a number of performance opportunities for student works at the conservatory. As part of a year-long course on orchestration, all third-year students participate in an orchestral reading session with the Conservatory Orchestra. Student works are also programmed on the concerts performed by the conservatory's New Music Ensemble. Other opportunities for performance include the weekly noon recitals as well as concerts dedicated to student compositions each semester on the Soundbites series. A state-of-the-art recording studio is available for professional recording of student works. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of performance opportunities available within NUS and Singapore.

Increasing the vibrancy of contemporary musical activities at the conservatory are frequent visits by internationally-recognized figures of contemporary music. These provide exposure to the current, diverse trends pursued in contemporary music. Students of the composition program have gone on to top graduate programs and received performances at festivals around the world.
