THE PIANO DEPARTMENT
The intensive training programme offered by the Conservatory's piano department attracts outstanding applicants from Asia, Europe, the United States and Australasia. The intake each year is small--and highly selective--so that artist faculty members can attend to the individual needs and personal development of each pianist invited here for study.
At the moment we offer the Bachelor of Music (Honours), Graduate Diplomas in both Piano and Two Piano Performance, and a Young Artist Programme designed for outstanding pre-tertiary applicants (see Young Artist Programme). The inaugural Yong Siew Toh International Piano Institute was launched successfully in 2007, with a third session in December, 2010.
In addition to the individual weekly lessons with their major study teacher, performance majors focus on collaborative piano studies, accompanying, and piano ensemble (study and performance of piano four hand and two piano works) - all areas which support and feature prominently in our performance-oriented curriculum. Pianists also enroll in Keyboard Literature modules which survey solo and chamber literature from the early 18th century to the present.
The performance opportunities at the Conservatory are numerous and offer our pianists an ongoing array of public appearances. The Primarily Piano, Piano Duels and Concerto Extravaganza concerts attract large audiences to the Concert Hall and require each pianist to develop and maintain an active portfolio of solo, ensemble and concerto repertoire. There are also opportunities to perform off campus in many of Singapore's most beautiful and sought-after venues, including the Esplanade and Victoria Concert Hall.
Our pianist have also received invitations to perform overseas as concerto soloists with renowned orchestras, including debuts with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (Leigh Kereopa, New Zealand); the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra (Azariah Tan, Singapore); the Guizhan Orchestra (Chang Hanqing, China); the Vietnam National Orchestra (Tran Thi Tam Ngoc, Vietnam); the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (Jonathan Shin, Singapore); the Singapore Festival Orchestra (Li Zhen, China, Maria Immaculata Setiadi, Indonesia, Kwon Cheo Yong, Korea, Cheng Shih Wei, Taiwan) and the Bangkok Symphony (Tarin Supprakorn, Thailand).
When considered together with our generous scholarship awards and state-of-the-art practice and concert facilities (second to none in this part of the world), it is easy to understand why so many professionally-minded young pianists consider Yong Siew Toh Conservatory as the premiere choice for piano study. As a result, our pianists are often selected for study at prestigious festivals around the world, including the Verbier, Aspen, Orford, Banff, Bowdoin, Brasov, Pan Pacific, Yellow Barn, Chethams, Kirishima, Mannes, Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, Semaine and Gold Country summer music programmes.
