DEPARTMENT STUDIES

THE STRINGS DEPARTMENT
The strings programme is intended for players showing a high level of ability and musicianship with the potential for a career as a soloist, chamber or orchestral musician. The focus is on the individual and to support this emphasis, overall numbers in the department are deliberately small: each year we aim to support just 10 violinists and 5 violists, cellists and double bassists at the undergraduate level. As a consequence, it is possible to care for each person with a balanced curriculum of solo studies, chamber music and orchestral/large ensemble activity.

Students have weekly individual and studio lessons with internationally-acclaimed faculty members. In the fourth year, students work towards a full length senior recital which is performed in the Conservatory Concert Hall.

Performance is seen as the heart of the training: every semester, students work towards performing in solo or chamber concerts presented by the Conservatory on campus as well as in the community.

Large Ensembles
All string players are also members of one of two large ensembles - the Conservatory Orchestra (Jason Lai, Principal Conductor) and the Conservatory New Music Ensemble. Both ensembles provide training and performance opportunities, exposing students to the music of the 18th through 21st centuries. Seating arrangements in large ensembles are rotated as much as possible so that students learn to take on different roles in ensemble performance.

Each season, the Conservatory Orchestra performs a series of public concerts in Singapore's major concert halls with a programme that includes a cross-section of the standard orchestral repertoire, supplemented by new works and lesser-known compositions. The orchestra also rehearses and performs with visiting guest conductors such as Lan Shui, Claus Peter Flor, Christopher Adey, Barry Tuckwell, Yip Wing-Sie and Leon Fleisher.

The New Music Ensemble focuses on repertoire created in the last 40 years and performs twice yearly at the Esplanade as part of the Spectrum series.

Chamber Music
Students receive coaching in chamber music with the award-winning T'ang Quartet, the Conservatory's Quartet-in-Residence.

The Rin Collection
String students at the Conservatory are extremely fortunate in having been lent over 60 rare instruments from the unique collection of Mr and Mrs Rin Kei Mei.
