Latvian violinist Ilya Grubert studied at the Moscow Conservatory with renowned Russian teachers Yuri Yankelevich, Zinaida Gilels and Leonid Kogan. After winning first prizes in the prestigious Paganini Competition in Genova and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1978, Ilya Grubert embarked on a highly successful career performing with many distinguished orchestras including the St Petersburg Philharmonic, BBC Welsh Symphony and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. At his New York recital debut, the New York Times described him as ‘a musician of exceptional talent in the tradition of the great virtuosos, possessed of an unwavering tone and extraordinary technique’. Ilya Grubert is currently violin professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory.
