Sandaya: An Introduction to the Unique Use of the Piano in Burmese Music
Tue, 26 Jan 10
5.30pm, Conservatory Recital Studio

Dr Kit Young, presenter
In 1872, a piano was given to the Burmese King Mindon in Mandalay. The court musicians immediately started incorporating it in their ensembles, using the techniques of playing from Burmese instruments. The piano became an integral part of Burmese music as players developed a virtuosic playing style to accompany films, dramas and singers in the 20th century. This presentation is given by Dr Young, who started working with Burmese musicians in 1989 and studied with Burmese pianists in 1996. Dr Young moved to Myanmar in 2003 where she studied sandaya with Gita Lu Lin Maung Ko Ko and U Yi Nwe, performed with singers and traditional ensembles and founded the Gitameit Music Center with her Burmese colleagues and students.
