FRENCH MUSIC IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF Chopin
Tue, 20 Oct 09
5.30pm, Conservatory Recital Studio

Roy Howat presenter

Chopin had a pervasive influence later French and other music, not only through the originality of his own piano writing and compositional original, but also through the performing traditions passed on by his pupils such as the Paris Conservatoire. This influence directly marked composers including Fauré, Chabrier, Debussy, Ravel and even Satie, and becomes all the more interesting the more their music shows its own originality. In their music we can feel Chopin through the hands at the piano, through the suppleness of their invention, and through their compositional breadth and daring. This lecture traces some of the links and throws light on various performing and analytic issues.
