Music for a Royal Palace
Tue, 11 Aug 09
5.30pm, Conservatory Recital Studio
Christopher Adler, presenter
Composer Christopher Adler discusses the cross-cultural origins of his composition “Music for a Royal Palace", which was commissioned by the Silk Road Project and the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall. Building on a decade of experience with the traditional music of Thailand, he sought in this work to compose a cross-cultural work with the individual virtuosity equivalent to the most impressive performances of Thai classical music. The composition, for Chinese mouth organ (sheng), viola, marimba, and percussion, negotiates a complex cultural interaction between Chinese, Thai and Western musical traditions, and takes the architecture of the Thai Royal Palace at Bang-Pa In as an analogy and inspiration.
