Forum Series:
An Introduction to Intonation Theory
Tue, 23 Mar 10
5.30pm, Conservatory Recital Studio

Steven Miller, presenter
Intonation systems - the theory and practice of tuning systems - are among the most fundamental and yet overlooked resources for the creative musician. From historical and early music, to non-western musics, to experimental musics of the 20th Century, intonation systems are at the heart of music as it is actually composed, performed, and heard. Only in comparatively modern times, and in the practice of Western classical and popular musics, has the hegemony of 12-tone equal temperament been largely assumed. This talk will lay out some of the foundations for exploration of both historical and creative tuning systems. It will be applicable for those interested in composition, performance, historical musicology, music theory, and experimental music. Numerous audio examples will be included.

Steven Miller is a composer, sound artist, and musician currently based in Singapore where he is Associate Professor of Sonic Arts at the Conservatory.
