Forum Series:
Franz and Richard Strauss - the Father & the Son
Tue, 2 Feb 10
5.30pm, Conservatory Recital Studio
Dr Craig De Wilde, presenter
The impact of Franz Strauss on the early musical education of his son, the German late-Romantic composer Richard Strauss (1864-1949), is of primary significance. Most biographers admit that Franz had a part in his son's early musical experiences, but these biographers do not describe adequately the extent of this influence, nor the specific ways in which this influence was manifested in Richard's work. Franz supervised every step of Richard's musical training; nurturing his son's compositional talents. The extant correspondence displays a strong emotional attachment between father and son, and the pride and respect that each held for the other is evident. This presentation will look at this relationship in detail, outlining the early musical education of one of music's most influential composers at the turn of the 20th century.
Craig De Wilde is Deputy Director at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. A specialist in 19th and 20th Century art music and popular music history, has published widely on the music of Strauss as well as on popular music topics in jazz history, protest music, and the commercial music industry.
