The Archaeology of Mbira Music in Zimbabwe: Modern Theories about Ancient Practices
Tue, 23 Feb 10
5.30pm, Conservatory Recital Studio
Dr Lewis Peterman, presenter
In modern times the music of the Shona 22-key mbira dzavadzimu normally consists of two interdependent musical parts performed by two mbria players: a leading kushaura part and an interlocking kutsinhira. This presentation will explore new theories about the physical morphology of the Shona mbira (from 4 keys to 22 keys), about the evolution of interlocking musical parts (i.e., 2 or more), and about the reconstruction of mbira orchestral music of the ancient royal courts of Zimbabwe.
Dr. Lewis Peterman is currently president of San Diego's Center for World Music.
