Mr Tan Wei Boon is Associate Director of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, where he has been a member of the administration since the founding years of the Conservatory. In his capacity as the coordinator of student affairs since the inaugural class in 2003, he has been responsible for planning, overseeing and implementing freshmen orientation programmes and assisting international students in adapting to life on campus. Wei Boon looks into matters relating to student welfare, discipline, and also assists in academic consultation.
As the Conservatory's in-house creative designer, Wei Boon produces all of the Conservatory's publicity materials, including posters, flyers, banners, concert booklets, newsletters, student handbook, concert calendar and admissions prospectus. He was also instrumental in the creation of the new website and is responsible for establishing the corporate image of the Conservatory. Since 2007, Wei Boon leads the Conservatory Admissions Office in recruiting talented music students from all over the world to the Conservatory and is also in charge of coordinating the student exchange programme with Peabody Conservatory. His portfolio is also recently expanded to include the Conservatory Alumni Relations Office. He is also appointed a Management Board member of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra since 2011.
Wei Boon is a prominent wind ensemble and orchestra musician in Singapore, having performed with numerous groups over the last 18 years, including the Singapore Wind Symphony, NUS Wind Symphony, NUS Symphony Orchestra, Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra, NIE Symphonic Band, Thomson Big Band, Singapore National Youth Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. He was the bass trombonist of The Philharmonic Winds (Philwinds), one of the most successful and dynamic wind ensembles in Singapore and was a member of the team, which won the prestigious Gold with Distinction award at the 2005 World Music Contest in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. Wei Boon was also in the founding committee of the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra (renamed The Philharmonic Orchestra) where he performed as an orchestra musician in collaboration with the Singapore Lyric Opera in La Traviata, Carmen, The Student Prince, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, Fiddler on the Roof, Die Fledermaus, Tosca, Madam Butterfly and Turandot. He participated in the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in 1998 and 2000, the Japan International Youth Musicale in 2000 as an orchestra musician and the 2009 Japan Band Clinic with the Philwinds. In addition to his extensive involvement in opera and orchestra performances, Wei Boon was also the bass trombonist of ACTION Theatre's production of the musical, Chang & Eng during the 2001 - 2002 season. Since 2010, Wei Boon performs with Singapore's award-winning Orchestra of the Music Makers.
Wei Boon has previously been appointed as a tutor of the wind bands of various schools including the Catholic Junior College, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), St Margaret's Secondary School, Peirce Secondary School, Loyang Secondary School, Singapore Polytechnic and the Presbyterian High School.
In recognition of his contributions to education in Singapore, Wei Boon was awarded the Commendation Medal by the President of Republic of Singapore, at the 2010 National Day Honours.
