LOW SHAO SUAN & LOW SHAO YING

Low Shao Suan and Low Shao Ying studied the piano under Madam Yeo Bee Choo, Mr Ong Lip Tat and Mr Benjamin Loh, and obtained their Licentiate of the Trinity College of London (LTCL), Fellowship of the Trinity College of London (FTCL) and Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in piano performing and piano accompanying. They furthered their musical studies at the famed École Normale de Musique de Paris-Alfred Cortot, under the Lee Foundation and the National Arts Council (NAC) grants, where they studied piano under the late Madam Annie d'Arco and the late Mr Julian Ridoret, and chamber music under Madam Chantal de Buchy.

They have won prizes at competitions including 1st prize at the Competition Claude Kahn for piano duet, 1st and 2nd prizes at the Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche Competition, and 2nd and 3rd prizes at the International Competition of U.F.A.M. in Paris. The sisters have also performed at prestigious concert halls such as the Salle Gaveau and the Salle Cortot in Paris, and they have also given a week-long piano duet recital at the Hotel Méridien-Montparnasse in Paris for students chosen from their school as well as from the Paris Conservatory. Participation in masterclasses enabled them to study under well-known pianists such as Ms Nelly Ben-Or in London, and Mr Olivier Gardon in Paris.

Since their return to Singapore, Shao Suan and Shao Ying have performed Poulenc's Concerto for 2 Pianos with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) under the baton of Maestro Choo Hoey at the country's First Presidential Charity Concert, as well as Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals at the Young Person's Concert under Mr Lim Yau in 1995. They were also featured in the June issue of the Vogue magazine in 1995. In 1996, they gave their first successful Two-Piano Recital at the Victoria Concert Hall and a year later, they performed Mozart's Concerto for 2 Pianos in E-flat major with the Temasek Junior College Orchestra for its 20th anniversary concert. They have also taken part in charity concerts, such as the Bonae Voluntatis Gala in 1997. In February 1999, the sisters were invited to perform at the Istana by the late ex-President of Singapore, Ong Teng Cheong, and later in July, they gave a piano duet recital in Carosa Seri Negara, Kuala Lumpur. Two months later, they performed with the SSO for the Young People's Concert. In March 2002, they gave a Singapore premiere of Bruch's Concerto for 2 Pianos and Orchestra in A-flat minor, Op. 88a with the SSO, and they also performed at the Esplanade's Open House in September that same year. In August 2004, they gave another successful two-piano recital, Sisters' Act, at the Esplanade Recital Studio as part of the Esplanade's Chamber Music Series. In September 2006, the sisters performed Mozart's Concerto for 2 Pianos in E-flat major with the SSO, and three months later, they performed at the Asia Grand Piano Concert in Seoul, Korea, where their composition, Rondo for 3 Pianos 12 Hands, was being showcased. The concert was held at the Seoul Arts Centre Concert Hall, and it was broadcasted “live" on national television.

As active accompanists and chamber musicians, Shao Suan and Shao Ying have collaborated with local and international musicians and vocalists from the SSO, Singapore Armed Forces Central Band, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore Lyric Opera, the International Festival Chorus, and the Singapore Press Holdings Chinese Choir, and have performed in Singapore, as well as in France, Denmark, Italy, Portugal, China, Inner Mongolia, Thailand and Malaysia. In September 2002, they were appointed as piano accompanists by the NAC for the 2002 National Chinese Music Competition for Erhu Open category. They are also regular piano accompanists for exams and competitions, and have participated in the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists Competition 2000 in England, the 5th National Competition for Young Cellists 2004 in Guangzhou, China, and the 2006 Adam International Cello Festival and Competition in Christchurch, New Zealand. The sisters are currently members of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music accompanying staff.

Besides the piano, Shao Suan and Shao Ying also studied the harpsichord under well-known harpsichordist, Mr Ilton Wjuniski. In 1997, they were invited to take part in a two-week full scholarship music camp in Villecroze, Southern France, for harpsichord students who were highly recommended by well-known musicians of the international level. Three months later, they also received another invitation to perform J.S. Bach's Concerto for 2 Harpsichords in C minor, BWV 1060 with the European Baroque Chamber Ensemble in Porto, Portugal, for its Baroque Music Festival.

Shao Suan and Shao Ying also enjoy composing. Some of their works, such as Morning Blues (finalist at the 2005 UK Songwriting Competition, "Instrumental" Category), Just Lazing Around, Serenade No.3 (2005 UKSC runner-up), Scherzino and Variations on a theme of "Happy Birthday" for violin and piano, Souvenirs de Paris (2005 UKSC finalist) and Valse de Printemps (2005 UKSC finalist) for 2 pianos have been performed in recitals. In 1998, their commissioned works, Rondo for 3 pianos 12 hands, and Danses Joyeuses for orchestra were written for the 4th President's Charity Concert for Young Talents, and the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra's annual concert respectively. In April 2007, Shao Ying's instrumental composition, In My Dreams, won the Soundtrack Contest on Broadjam, an independent website. As avid songwriters, the sisters have collaborated with well-known Canadian producer-songwriter, Vincent Degiorgio (the person behind the success of pop group N'SYNC), and they've written songs for singers such as Jolin Tsai, Suzanne Hsiao, Chen Yi Yi and Mink.
