He made his solo debut with the MPO in September 2001 performing the Zimmerman Trumpet Concerto, and can be heard as Principal Trumpet on several CDs with the MPO on the BIS and Vox Records labels.

Born in Chicago, William Theis was inspired by the sounds of the legendary Chicago Symphony Orchestra brass section to pursue a career in orchestral music. He has studied with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, including former Assistant Principal Trumpet William Scarlett, and also with members of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra. Most recently, he has been studying the Alexander Technique and its application to brass playing with former Lyric Opera trumpeter, John Henes, a master teacher of the Alexander Technique at the Northwestern University.

After receiving a Music Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado as a student of William Pfund, he went on to complete a Master’s degree at the Temple University in Philadelphia, studying with David Bilger, Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra. An active freelancer in the Philadelphia area, William Theis was also on the faculties of the Haddonfield (New Jersey) School of Performing Arts, and Settlement Music School in Philadelphia.

Before joining the MPO, William Theis participated in many festival orchestras including the 1998 Aspen Music Festival, where he was winner of the Brass Concerto Competition and performed with the American Brass Quintet. In addition to this, he has been a member of the National Repertory Orchestra, Verbier Festival with the Curtis Institute of Music Orchestra, and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra. In the fall of 2004, William Theis served as Principal Trumpet of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in Perth, which included a solo performance with Australian soprano Sara Macliver.

William Theis joined the Artist Faculty of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in January 2006, and recently made a solo appearance with the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Chamber Winds, performing David Gillingham’s trumpet concertino When Speaks the Signal Trumpet-Tone.
