Described recently as ‘both a brilliant virtuoso and a profound musician’ (The Straits Times Singapore, 2011), Belgian clarinetist Marcel Luxen has performed extensively as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician in Europe, Asia and Australia.
He has won prizes in international competitions, including the Masterplayers International Music Competition, Lugano and the Brussels International Clarinet Competition, and performed in some of the world’s most prestigious halls, including the Musikverein, Concertgebouw, Salle Pleyel, Suntory Hall and Palais des Beaux-Arts. Luxen has appeared as soloist with many orchestras including the Belgian Radio Television Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Camerata Leodiensis, Euregio Orchester and the Orchestre de Chambre de Wallonie. He has worked with conductors and chamber music partners such as Claudio Abbado, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Leonard Bernstein, Daniel Blumenthal, Maurice Bourgue, Lorin Maazel and Qin Li-Wei. He is a founding member and principal clarinet with the internationally acclaimed Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a teacher Luxen draws on a wealth of European tradition and contemporary technique. He studied with the internationally renowned Walter Boeykens in Antwerp and was also strongly influenced by Karl Leister (Berlin) at whose masterclasses he has performed on many occasions. Luxen is a member of the artist faculty of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore and a coach for the Jeunesse Musicales World Youth Orchestra. He records for Naxos and Koch Schwann and is both an International Buffet Crampon Artist and a Légère Artist. His recent CD, ‘Clarinet North-South-East-West’, was released by Naxos in 2010. An ardent supporter of contemporary music, Luxen has premiered recordings of works by European, Australian and Asian composers, including Michel Lysight, Matthew Hindson and Ho Chee Kong.
