Born in 1936, David Zinman graduated from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Ohio and pursued advanced work in composition at the University of Minnesota where he was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Conductor David Zinman has pursued a career on the podiums of the world's major orchestras. His musical development was guided by Pierre Monteux, who gave Zinman his first important conducting opportunities with the London Symphony Orchestra. Since his American conducting debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1967, David Zinman has served as Musical Director of the Rochester Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Artistic Director of the Minnesota Orchestra's Viennese Sommerfest. Currently, David Zinman is Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich, Switzerland and Music Director of the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado. He has guest conducted the leading North American ensembles and appeared with major orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Deutsches, Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Royal Concertgebouw, Royal Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic.
A renowned interpreter of the entire range of symphonic literature from Mozart to the moderns, David Zinman has displayed a strong commitment to the performance of contemporary music. His reputation has been enhanced by his extensive discography of more than 50 albums, among which have earned him two Grand Prix du Disque and two Edison Prizes.
