HEINZ HOLLIGER
Oboe

Berlin Academy of Fine Arts
Berlin, Germany

Heinz Hollinger was born in Langenthal, Switzerland in 1939. He is considered one of the world's leading oboe virtuosos, as well as a distinguished composer and conductor. Henze, Krenek, Berio, Penderecki, Lutoslawski and Stockhausen have written works for him. He studied composition with both Pierre Boulez and Sandor Veress, which may partially account for the mixture of logic and precision with the poetic and emotional expressiveness in his work. His works include a cantata Himmel und Erde for tenor and chamber group (1961); Studie for soprano, oboe and cello with harpsichord; Improvisation for oboe, harp and 12 string instruments (1963); Pneuma for 34 wind instruments and percussion (1970); Come and Go chamber opera (1977); Engfuhrung for chamber orchestra (1984); Tonscherben for orchestra (1985); What Where chamber opera (1988); a sonata for oboe and piano; sonata for oboe solo; and string quartet. Holliger has conducted all major Swiss orchestras and orchestras in Germany, the United States, Canada, Britain and Italy; he is a regular guest conductor at the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Basle Musik Forum, and the Zurich Opera House. Heinz Hollinger continues to tour and record with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Ensemble Modern and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie.
