This sculpture was created to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding
of Singapore. It celebrates the emergence of a nation in the powerful
figure of a young man holding the pearl of the future. The artist wished
to express his pride in his country, the excitement and challenge of its
extraordinary growth, its fusion of races and its vision of the future. It
symbolises the nation's spirit of determination, its will to succeed.
