An Afternoon with Simryn Gill

In Dalam (2001), Gill presents a photographic document of the material conditions of Malaysian homes through her survey of 258 living rooms. Djumini’s Relatives – Kerabat (2006) shows the economic and social dispositions of Indonesian households through a series of photographic portraits depicting families and their homes. Both artists’ practices have been shaped through the experiences of migration and diaspora, and their works may be regarded as extensions of their personal journeys and reflections. In their presentations, Gill and Djumini will outline the conceptual bases that informed their respective series and the artistic processes involved.

Bob Lee Keng Siang is a photojournalist with ‘my paper’ (我报) and a part time lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. His keen interest in people, the appreciation of the ordinary and his striking sense of empathy have enabled him to transform images of everyday life into insightful photographs. Bob’s work was picked as the top Jurors' Choice in the Singapore Art Awards 2005. During the 2003 "ClickArt: World Photojournalists Meet" held in Singapore, he clinched the top award in the "Behind the Scenes" category, putting him ahead of over 200 photojournalists from 32 countries.

Buildings are basic features in the urban landscape and play a key role in our association with a place. In rapidly changing environments where existing buildings frequently make way for new developments, records of built architectures and the activities taking place within them are instrumental to our collective understanding and recollection of history and ‘place’. Join Nadeson Selvanthan in this discovery of recording heritage through photography.

Nadeson Selvanthan is a documentary cameraman and a photographer who works on portraitures and architecture. He has done projects with various producers and TV stations including Discovery Channel, Channel New Asia, Channel U and National Geographic Channel. Documentaries filmed by Selvanathan include the New York Film Festival Award-winning “Vow of Celibacy”, SAF-commissioned “Push on Soldier”, “The 9th of August” and a two-part story on Maria Hertogh “My Name is Nadra”.
