Materializing the Figure

Ng Eng Teng Gallery, NUS Museum

Till 21 April 2010

NUS Museum Collection

Materializing the Figure, a temporary extension of the ongoing exhibition Sculpting Life: The Ng Eng Teng Collection, presents 30 sculptural works by Ng Eng Teng and other artists drawn from NUS Museum’s permanent collection.

These figurative sculptures are exhibited along three broad themes – Marking and Remembrance, Carving Identities and Materials as Expression – bringing attention to the varied possibilities of the human body as a vehicle for articulating a range of narratives.

Materials have different intrinsic properties which can be concurrently inspiring and confining. Works in stone, wood, bronze, clay, iron and plaster are displayed to motivate discussion on sculptors’ engagement with their selected medium and the symbiosis between material and the resultant form.
