Discordant Symmetries| Wei Leng Tay
17 September 2010 – 11 March 2011
The Gallery, 3rd Level
Baba House, 157 Neil Road
Discordant Symmetriesis a culmination of a year-long study by artist Wei Leng Tay questioning what it means to be Chinese in contemporary Singapore and Malaysia. Through still-life, portraiture photography and audio interviews, the exhibition aims to capture the tenuous relationship between the discourses of diaspora and identity, and the limits of these discourses in light of the growing globalization of culture and other socio-political influences. While such discourses provide historical context to broader issues, the exhibition seeks to question the relevancy of these much-discussed and increasingly politicized discourses and their effects on a certain Chinese communities living in Singapore and Malaysia.
Visits to the Baba House and the exhibition are By Appointment only. Visitors to the Baba House are required to sign up in advance for a heritage tour.
