An afternoon designed to inform and enlighten both the specialist and the non-specialist, this session explores selected aspects of Alvar Aalto’s architectural practice. His motivations and architectural philosophy will be discussed, including design in other domains (furniture et al) as a vital part of his architectonic entity as well as the relevance and applicability of his architectural ideas. The panel will be chaired by Associate Professor Wong Yunn Chii, Head of the NUS Department of Architecture. Featured speakers include Mr Markku Lahti, Director of the Alvar Aalto Foundation and Ms Mirkku Kullberg, Managing Director of Artek.

SPECIAL FEATURE: Gain deeper insights as Director Lahti gives a special tour of the exhibition following the panel discussion. Limited places available on a first-come-first-served basis.

About the panelists
Associate Professor Wong Yunn Chii is Head of the NUS Department of Architecture who completed his doctorate from the Masschusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He teaches Architecture Design as well as History, Theory and Criticism of Singapore and Modern Architecture. His research focuses on the history of modern architecture in Singapore and contemporary architecture, as well as industrial architecture and planning. He was the curator of Singapore Inaugural Architectural Exhibition for the Venice Biennale 2004.

Mr Markku Lahti was born in Jyväskylä, Finland – a town synonymous with Alvar Aalto’s architecture – and  has been the Director of the Alvar Aalto Foundation since 1998. Before that, he was the Director of the Alvar Aalto Museum since 1973. He has actively served on several Finnish boards and councils in connection with visual arts and architecture, and has lectured extensively on Finnish architecture.

Ms Mirkku Kullberg has been the Managing Director of Artek since 2005. Founded by Aalto and like-minded individuals, Artek produces furniture designs by Aalto. Ms Kullberg has studied both in Finland and abroad in International Business Studies and has held several appointments in various Finnish companies including Brand Director for Nanso.
