Accommodations
Housing Options

On campus housing:

Living on campus has many advantages, including the opportunity to start establishing a network of friends and neighbors and access to professional housing staff members who can answer your questions and help you locate University and community resources. On-campus housing is served by U-M buses.

On-campus housing options include:

  • Residence halls for undergraduate students only.
  • Henderson House, Martha Cook, and the Lawyers Club.
  • Northwood Community Apartments
  • Housing for undergraduate students (sophomore and above only), graduate students, faculty, staff, visiting scholars
  • Family housing for students, faculty, staff, and visiting scholars

As with any lease or contract, be sure that you understand your University of Michigan housing lease or contract before you sign it. Read the information about your contract at University Housing. University Housing also recommends buying renter’s insurance.

Off-campus housing:

Before looking for off-campus housing:

  • Read Tenant Basics
  • Read the Survey of Off-Campus Average Rental Rates & Vacancy Rates to get an idea of how much to expect to pay for off-campus housing.
  • Remember that your signature on a housing lease means that you have read the lease and accept the provisions of the lease. If you have questions about a lease, contact the Housing Information Office at 1011 Student Activities Building or Student Legal Services (enrolled students only) for assistance.
  • Plan how you will travel to and from campus. Check AATA and campus bus routes if you plan to travel by bus.

University Housing also recommends buying renter’s insurance.

Finding off-campus housing:

  • The University Housing Office maintains a list of available housing
  • The Intercooperative Council offers housing that is less expensive because residents share the work necessary to run the houses.
  • The Ecumenical Center and International Residence offers the opportunity to live and interact with students and visiting scholars from many different cultural, national, racial, and religious backgrounds who have chosen ECIR because they want to learn from each other.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulations

International students who are accepted to a University of Michigan exchange programme must obtain an F-1 visa.  Once students are admitted and have received their certificate of eligibility (I-20), they need to contact the nearest U.S. consulate in order to find information on applying for a visa.  Students must complete forms, submit documents (sometimes more than once), pay a fee (U.S $100), and schedule an interview with a consulate official.  Students should apply immediately for a passport, if they do not already have one.  For further information, please visit here.

Health/Medical Insurance

All international students enrolling at Michigan, including OIP exchange students, are required to carry adequate health (sickness and accident) insurance. Insurance coverage greatly reduces the costs of professional medical care, which otherwise can be quite expensive.

The University offers a comprehensive, fairly inexpensive plan - the International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan - for which students must sign up at the International Center upon arrival in Ann Arbor or during International Student Orientation.  For further information, please visit here.
