Accommodations
Housing Options

On campus housing:

Students can choose to live on campus in one of 22 undergraduate University Residence Halls(URH), 5 privately owned certified residence halls, and 12 certified fraternity and sorority houses. Campus accommodation is of a high standard, but usually shared. A standard package comprises a double room in an undergraduate hall, and a meal plan (14 meals). If a student chooses more expensive accommodation, they are responsible for paying the difference. Proposed rates for an academic year can be found here:
http://www.housing.illinois.edu/Future/International/Affordable%20Rates.aspx .

Depending on the hall, most students will need to move out of their room during breaks, but alternate accommodation will be provided.

Off-campus housing:

can range from $350 per month in a shared flat all the way up to $600 per month in a shared flat not including utilities. In addition to the monthly rent, utilities such as electricity, phone and water may cost up to $100 per month. Most leases run for a full year though. For more information, visit University Housing website at http://www.housing.uiuc.edu .

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulations

Present the I-20 or DS-2019 to the US Consulate or Embassy in your home country to obtain the F-1 student or J-1 exchange visitor visa. Citizens of Canada do not need a visa to study in the US, however, they must show the I-20 or DS-2019 to enter the US. Entry to the US is allowed up to 30 days before the program start date listed on your visa document.

Health/Medical Insurance

All students who attend US universities on exchange are required to purchase the health insurance recommended by their host university as part of the registration process. In addition, they can also purchase additional optional insurance from a private insurer for their term of study overseas. These short term optional insurance plans cover events such as personal accident, accidental medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation etc.

Because you will be enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance, you will receive two insurance cards in the mail. At the end of August, these cards will be sent to the address listed in your UI Integrate account. Thus, it is important to verify that your mailing address is correct. You can also download the card from here.

The gray card is your insurance card. Keep this card in your wallet in case you have to seek medical attention outside of McKinley. You will also receive a white card, which is the United Health Allies discount card. Because the student health insurance does not cover certain prescriptions, vision, and dental services, this discount card makes you eligible for discounts from various healthcare providers.

If you do not receive these cards or have lost them, you can request a temporary one by contacting the Student Insurance Office for a new permanent card. You may contact the Student Insurance Office with any questions you may have.

If you already have insurance coverage, you may choose to exempt from University Student Health Insurance. To find out more details about exempting out of the Student Health Insurance and the deadlines to do so, refer to this page. As stated above, please check with SAO before you make any request to exempt out of the Student Health Insurance.

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies.
