Accommodations
Housing Options

On-campus housing:

As part of a diverse community of over 9,300 undergraduates, you have many opportunities for interaction that contribute to your academic success and personal growth. Studies show that students who live on campus perform better academically, have more contact with faculty, and are generally happier with their college experience than students who commute. You can choose from several on-campus housing options, all of which encourage discovery and emphasize community.

Housing is not guaranteed for exchange students. Students may apply for the University Residence Halls and Apartments through the UCLA housing website found in the Other Links Section

Off-campus housing:

Students who prefer more independent living can choose from a variety of University-owned and privately-owned off-campus living options. Conveniently located within walking distance of campus, University Apartments offers single undergraduates a variety of furnished units. Five miles south of campus, UCLA’s University Village is designed especially for married students with or without children, students with same-gender domestic partners, and single parents. The Community Housing Office (http://www.cho.ucla.edu/) offers resources to students interested in finding different types of privately-owned housing in neighborhoods close to campus.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulations

Once you have been approved to study in the United States and officially admitted to the University, you will receive your Certificate of Eligibility (DS-2019). Your Certificate of Eligibility is valid for 30 days before and 30 days after your academic program. This means that if you so desire, you can arrive in the United States one month before Purdue’s semester begins and depart for your home country one month after the semester ends.

After paying the SEVIS fee, take the SEVIS receipt, the Form DS-2019, valid passport, and evidence of financial support to the nearest U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate to obtain your J-1 exchange visitor visa.  When you depart for the U.S. be sure to carry these documents with you. You should also carry original financial documents as proof to support the funding listed on your Form DS-2019.  A United States immigration officer will review these items at your U.S. city of arrival.

Health/Medical Insurance

All students who attend US universities on exchange are required to purchase the health insurance recommended by their host university as part of the registration process. In addition, they can also purchase additional optional insurance from a private insurer for their term of study overseas. These short term optional insurance plans cover events such as personal accident, accidental medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation etc. At UCLA, students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan unless they complete a waiver form that provides proof of equivalent coverage, and it is approved. More information about the waiver can be found at http://www.studenthealth.ucla.edu/.

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies.
