From humble beginnings in 1876 as Texas' first public institution of higher learning, to a bustling 5,000-acre campus with 46,000-plus students and a nationally recognized faculty, Texas A&M University is one of a select few universities with land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant designations. With an enrolment of approx. half men and half women, 25 percent of the freshman class are the first in their family to attend college and 8,500 are graduate students. Texas A&M has two branch campuses, one in Galveston, Texas, and one in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar. This research-intensive flagship university with 10 colleges was recently ranked first in the nation by The Washington Monthly for "tangible contributions to the public interest." U.S. News and World Report ranked Texas A&M third nationally as a "best value" among public universities. Many degree programs are ranked among the top 10 in the country. |

Housing Options |
||||||||||||||
On campus housing: Unless students request otherwise, the Study Abroad office arranges for undergraduates to live in residence hall or dormitories (dorms) on campus because the experience of living on-campus with a roommate is the best opportunity for you to fully immerse yourself in the university culture of the United States. Reciprocal exchange students are generally assigned to “corridor” style dorms because they are best for meeting people as well as being more affordable and convenient as far as showers and such are concerned. Undergraduate students must apply online for on-campus Residence Halls and remit appropriate housing application and room deposit fees (housing application instructions are included in your welcome packet of information) Off campus housing: Students can receive help locating off-campus apartments at the Student Life Programs Office, (Tel: 979-845-1741). |

Health/Medical Insurance |
||||||||||||||
The U.S. Government and the University have very strict guidelines concerning health insurance for international students. As a J-1 student visa holder, you will be required to show proof that you have coverage which satisfies the requirement. If you do not adequately fulfill the insurance requirements, you will be blocked from registering for your classes. The simplest way to meet the insurance requirement is to purchase health insurance from Texas A&M. This can be done after you arrive in College Station. http://iss.tamu.edu/insurance/forstudents.asp Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies. |
