Institution Profile

Rice University was founded in 1912 and is the oldest university in Houston. Nationally known for science and engineering, Rice has the fifth largest endowment per student among American universities (after Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Stanford) and is consistently ranked one of America's best teaching and research university.

Rice's wooded campus is located in central Houston, the nation's fourth largest city and on America's South Coast. Rice is distinguished by its small undergraduate student body (about 2,850); its residential college system, which builds communities that are both close-knit and diverse; and collaborative culture, which crosses disciplines, integrates teaching and research, and intermingles undergraduate and graduate work.

Accommodations
Housing Options

On campus housing:

Please visit: http://housing.rice.edu/

There are currently eleven residential colleges, with six (Baker, Hanszen, Lovett, Sid Richardson, Wiess, and Will Rice) on the south side of campus and five (Brown, Jones, Martel, Duncan, and McMurtry) on the north. The latter two north colleges will be housing students for the first time during the 2009-2010 school year. Although each college is composed of a full cross-section of students at Rice, they have over time developed their own traditions and "personalities". When students matriculate they are randomly assigned to one of the eleven colleges, although "legacy" exceptions are made for students whose siblings or other close relatives have attended Rice. Students generally remain members of the college that they are assigned to for the duration of their undergraduate careers, even if they move off-campus at any point. Students are guaranteed on-campus housing for freshman year and two of the next three years; each college has its own system for determining allocation of the remaining spaces, collectively known as "Room Jacking". Students develop strong loyalties to their college and maintain friendly rivalry with other colleges, especially during events such as Beer Bike and O-Week.

Off-campus:

Rice has an on-line resource for off-campus housing.

Apartments and rooms for rent far from Rice University may be less expensive than those nearby. Public transportation may be a problem with the more distant locations, however. If you do not own a car, you should find out about bus routes before selecting a place to live.

Rates vary according to location, neighborhood, amenities provided, age, and condition of the complex. The average one bedroom unfurnished (without furniture, but with appliances) apartment near campus costs approximately $500-$750 a month. Renting with furniture adds approximately $300 more per month. An unfurnished two-bedroom apartment has an average cost of approximately $600-$950. Utilities (gas, electricity and telephone) are usually charged separately and add approximately $150 to your monthly costs. Utilities are discussed further on pages 15. Students often prefer to share an apartment in order to save money. Occasionally, rooms in homes are available at a lower cost. Visit Rice’s online resource website for listings of garage apartments, rooms, and students desiring roommates.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulation

Upon receiving your DS-2019, you will need to apply for your J-1 visa at a U.S. consulate or embassy. We recommend you visit the website of the US Embassy/Consulate where you wish to apply for your visa, and follow the procedures for documentation, interview request, etc. In general, you will need to present:

  • 1.    A valid passport from your own government.
    2.    A “Certificate of Eligibility” for a temporary stay in the U.S. (Form DS-2019 by Rice University or another
           sponsor).
    3.    Financial documents to prove you have the funds required for a least a year’s stay in the U.S. (as
           indicated on the DS-2019).
    4.    Proof of payment of the SEVIS fee. All J-1 visa applicants need to pay the one time SEVIS fee prior to
applying for a visa. Keep your receipt as proof of payment to present to the US Consulate, port of entry
officials when entering the U.S., OISS upon check-in, and for your records. For more information visit:
           www.FMJfee.com.
    5.    Completed visa application forms – be sure to indicate your name as stated on your passport and your
DS-2019 documents to better ensure that your name on your visa stamp will be displayed properly.

Health/Medical Insurance

Medical costs in the United States are very high. All students at Rice University are required to have health insurance coverage, and show proof of coverage before registering for classes. All non-immigrant visa holders and their dependents are required to carry insurance for the duration of their program. Health insurance is necessary for everyone in the United States.

For all students: The yearly individual cost for health insurance is about $1500-$2200(without any doctoral student departmental subsidy), depending on the coverage desired. Family coverage is also available and is absolutely necessary for married students. A Health Service Fee of approximately $220 per semester is also required by Rice University. This fee pays for your use of campus health service only. It is entirely separate from the health insurance which helps pay for hospital or physician bills off campus.

From Fall 2012, all incoming Rice students are required to obtain Meningitis Vaccination. Students are also required to submit a Medical Report.
