Northwestern University (NU) is a private research university located in Evanston, Illinois and downtown Chicago. Northwestern's main campus is a 240-acre parcel in Evanston, along the shore of Lake Michigan. Several of Northwestern's professional schools such as the School of Law, the Feinberg School of Medicine, and parts of the Kellogg School of Management are located in the Streeterville neighbourhood of downtown Chicago. Founded in 1851 to serve the people of the Northwest Territory, a 379-acre tract of farmland along Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago was chosen as the new Evanston campus. Today the University is organized into eleven schools and colleges granting undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. Northwestern's professional schools as well as programs in journalism, theater, industrial management, and material science have historically been ranked or otherwise recognized as being among the best in their respective fields. In 2006, student enrolments include approximately 8,000 undergraduate and 7,200 graduate students. Northwestern competes in the NCAA's Division I and is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. |

Housing Options |
On campus housing: Northwestern’s on-campus living options range from smaller residences with as few as 21 students to larger units housing more than 600. The Evanston campus is home to older, ivy-covered houses, residence halls, and residential colleges as well as recently built halls. Each building has its own character, spirit, and unique advantages. Northwestern’s housing options are as varied as its students. From their oldest residence hall still in use (built in 1901) to their newest residential college (built in 2002), and everything in between, there is a building and a style to fit just about everyone's preference in living style. For more information on the application procedure, please visit here. Off campus housing: Northwestern University does not provide an apartment finding service. However there are listings to a number of web links of places that specialize in advertising places to rent or sub-lease. (http://www.northwestern.edu/offcampus/). |

Consular/Visa Regulation |
Visa processing times vary widely depending on the country and time of year, and some applications may undergo a rigid and time-consuming background check. If you are subject to a background check, there is little Northwestern can do to speed up the process. Therefore, we suggest scheduling your appointment as soon as you receive your DS-2019, no sooner. U.S. consulates and embassies will issue J-1 visa stamps no earlier than 120 days prior to the start date listed on the DS-2019. Once you receive your visa, you may enter the US no earlier than 30 days prior to the program start date. For further details, please click here. |

Health/Medical Insurance |
All students at Northwestern must submit the Admission Health Record and proof of immunizations as required by the state of Illinois. NOTE: Penalties for not fulfilling health requirements include a hold on subsequent registration and a non-refundable $100 late fee. A mandate has been set by the NU Office of the Provost requiring all new international students attending NU beginning September 1, 2012 be automatically enrolled in the NU/Aetna Plan. "International Student" is defined as holding a F-1 or J-1 United States Visa. As an entering International Student, you do not need to complete the Coverage Selection Form. Upon your full time class registration posting in the CAESAR system, your CAESAR account will automatically be charged and enrollment into the NU/Aetna plan completed. The effective coverage period will be retroactive back to September 1, 2012, valid through August 31, 2013. Please confirm that your local Illinois address is updated in the CAESAR system, as that is where Aetna Student Health will forward your active membership card for proof of coverage. Once you have submitted your online Coverage Selection Form, you should receive a confirmation email. If you have difficulty logging in to complete the form or you do not receive an email confirming your selection, please call the Insurance Office at 847 491-2113 (Evanston Campus) or 312 503-1242 (Chicago Campus) for assistance. After the close of Open Enrollment, students will not be able to access this form online. Only new entering students for the Winter and Spring Quarters can go online to complete the Coverage Selection Form during the Open Enrollment period. New Summer Quarter students must complete a hard copy of the Coverage Selection Form (PDF). Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies. |
