Institution Profile

Arizona State University (ASU) is a single, unified institution comprising four differentiated campuses – the serene historic Tempe campus, the West campus in northwest Phoenix, the Polytechnic campus in Mesa and the newest downtown Phoenix campus. These four campuses positively impact the economic, social, cultural and environmental health of the communities ASU serves. Its research is inspired by real world application, blurring the boundaries that traditionally separate academic disciplines. ASU serves more than 63,000 students in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, the nation’s fifth largest city. Its nationally competitive programs include business, architecture and interior design. ASU champions intellectual and cultural diversity, and welcomes students from all fifty states and more than one hundred nations.

ASU offers outstanding resources for study and research including libraries and museums with important collections, studios and performing arts spaces for creative endeavor, and unsurpassed state-of-the-art scientific and technological research facilities.  In addition to the historic Tempe campus, the university comprises three newer campuses with more specialized missions:  ASU at the West campus balances the traditions of a liberal arts education with responsiveness to the dynamics of the workforce.  ASU at the Polytechnic campus integrates applied science and technology.  And with plans for a campus in downtown Phoenix focused on the public mission of the university, ASU is a key stakeholder in the revitalization of the historic urban core of Phoenix

Accommodations
Housing Options

On-campus:

The on-campus housing is available but not guaranteed. Exchange students are encouraged to live in the newly-created ASU Global Village Residential Community located in the Cholla Apartments. This multicultural community, composed of international exchange students as well as students from the United States, provides an opportunity for cross-cultural interaction in a safe, convenient, on-campus location. Programming within Cholla Apartments includes activities such as educational workshops and social events.

Off-campus:

Living off-campus means finding one's own apartment, or an apartment to share with other exchange students.  This year, “Gateway at Tempe” apartments is a great off-campus alternative for exchange students to consider. Gateway is composed of 97% students and is operated year-round, with options of 1 to 4 bedrooms which can come fully-furnished. All apartments have a refrigerator, washer and dryer, dishwasher, ceiling fans, and more. The apartment complex is one half-mile from the ASU Tempe campus and is situated along a shuttle route.  Roommate matching options are available.

In addition to Gateway, there are several other off-campus housing options. A wealth of resources is available through ASU’s Off Campus and Commuter Student Services (OCCSS). OCCSS provides programs, support, and assistance for students who live off-campus and commute to attend classes. They are knowledgeable about the surrounding neighborhoods and housing options and can assist students in their search for other housing opportunities.

Before signing a lease, students should also read about legal issues related to housing at: http://www.asu.edu/mu/legal/landlord.htm.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulation

Once you are admitted to the university, Undergraduate Admissions will send you a Certificate of Eligibility (Form DS-2019). This document, together with your notification of admission, the financial guarantee and your passport, is used to obtain a J-1 visa at a U.S. consulate nearest to you. To apply for a visa in your home country, you must apply early and expect delays. Consult individual embassy Web sites for periodic updates on country-specific visa processing. Lists of U.S. Embassies can be accessed through http://usembassy.state.gov.

Health/Medical Insurance

Arizona State University requires that international students have adequate medical and accident insurance coverage. All international students must enroll in the ASU health insurance plan, and cost for medical coverage is included in the registration billing.

There is a special provision for students who have health insurance through their government, or who are under the sponsorship of an agency that is responsible for their educational expenses, including medical coverage. All such coverage must be pre-approved and be equal or better than the coverage provided by the ASU policy.

There is also an exception for certain dependents of employees who have coverage through their U.S. employers. Students who are exempt from enrolling in the ASU insurance plan must obtain a waiver each semester; no waivers are granted after the second week of classes. For further information visit the Campus Health Services.

Students are required to have proof of MMR Vaccination.
