Institution Profile

The University was founded in 1832, and developed in Durham and Newcastle until 1963, when the independent University of Newcastle upon Tyne came into being. The University is collegiate and is located in the city of Durham and the nearby town of Stockton-on-Tees. The colleges are not teaching bodies, nor are they purely residential - typically they provide a centre for students' sporting, social and residential activities.

The university has over 15,000 students (of whom 3,500 are postgraduates and over 3,000 international students from over 120 countries).

Accommodations
Housing Options

Each college is unique. This diversity allows students considerable choice to apply to a college which offers exactly what they are looking for.

Colleges vary in size and tradition, as well as in physical and non-physical structure. Whether large or small, traditional or modern, based at Queen's Campus or in Durham City, all colleges offer a supportive environment for students to engage in learning and to enjoy a wide range of social, sporting and cultural activities.

The university likes to encourage all students to express a preference for a college on their application form and the individual college web pages may help them make their choice.  Please note that if the student’s programme of study is based at the Durham campus, they may only choose a college based in Durham, and if their course is based at Queen's Campus, they may only express a preference for a college based at Stockton.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulation

If you intend to travel to the UK to enrol on a course of studies which lasts 6 months (or more), you must obtain a Tier 4 (General) student visa before travelling to the UK.

If you are a Singaporean citizen or a citizen of another country on the UK non-visa nationals list, and if your course of studies is less than 6 months, you can apply for entry to the UK as a student visitor either prior to leaving your home country, or on arrival at UK immigration at the port of entry.  If you are a citizen of a country not on the non-visa nationals list then you still must obtain a Tier 4 (General) student visa before travelling to the UK.

Health/Medical Insurance

Britain has a subsidized health service which provides free health care and treatment for people who are resident in Britain.

Students who are enrolled on a programme which will last for more than six months are also entitled to NHS treatment.

If a doctor prescribes any medicines these are subsidized but there will be a charge made for each prescription - currently 5.75 UK Pounds per item.

Dental treatment is subsidized by NHS but everyone has to pay something towards the cost of their treatment.
