SEP Application
Restrictions for Exchange Students

Suitable for students from the following faculties:

  • FASS (History, Philosophy – Full year only, Geography, Psychology – Full year only, Russian & East European Studies - Full year only, Antiquity & Archaeology - Semester 1 or Full year only, Political Science - Semester 1 or Full year only. Exclude Social Work major)
  • FOE (Chemical, Electronic, Mechanical)
  • FOS (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics – Full year only. All other FOS majors are for Semester 2 or Full year only.)
  • SOC (Computer Science – Semester 2 only)

Full year exchange is strongly encouraged. Some of the departments only allow exams in Semester 2. If students go for Semester 1 only, they should be prepared for the possibility of sitting for their exams remotely in May/June.

Students are reminded to check the list of courses available at Birmingham and note all restrictions listed above: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/students/studyabroad/modules/index.aspx

One of the distinctive features of academic life in the UK is the specialised nature of the study which students undertake in higher education. Students will usually 'belong' to one and, at most, two schools or departments and will take the majority of their modules here.

As far as possible exchange students should try to choose the majority of their modules from one specific department as this will help to give them a better 'identity' during their time at Birmingham. We will allocate all students a 'host department' on the basis of the module choices in the application form.

Guidelines for selection modules:

Housing Options

Unfortunately the University is unable to guarantee University accommodation for all the students participating on the Incoming Student Exchange Programme. It will assist to secure University accommodation for the International Exchange students who request it.

For students arriving in Birmingham for Learning Period II (January) we are usually able to provide University accommodation.

Alternatively, students may decide to rent a house in the private sector. Housing Services at the University offers a list of approved landlords for students who wish to rent privately, they also run a house hunting event at the start of each year.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulation

If you intend to travel to the UK to enrol on a course of studies which lasts 6 months (or more), you must obtain a Tier 4 (General) student visa before travelling to the UK.

If you are a Singaporean citizen or a citizen of another country on the UK non-visa nationals list, and if your course of studies is less than 6 months, you can apply for entry to the UK as a student visitor either prior to leaving your home country, or on arrival at UK immigration at the port of entry. If you are a citizen of a country not on the non-visa nationals list then you still must obtain a Tier 4 (General) student visa before travelling to the UK.

Student Visitor application information: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/visiting/student/apply/

Health/Medical Insurance

Britain has a subsidized health service which provides free health care and treatment for people who are resident in Britain.

Students who are enrolled on a programme which will last for more than six months are also entitled to NHS treatment.

If a doctor prescribes any medicines these are subsidized but there will be a charge made for each prescription - currently 5.75 UK Pounds per item.

Dental treatment is subsidized by NHS but everyone has to pay something towards the cost of their treatment.
