Health/Medical Insurance

I. Legal requirements

According to a law dated 18 March 1994, every person resident in Switzerland must be insured with one of the health insurance companies officially recognised by the Confederation.

II. Special directives

Foreign students in possession of a residence permit for more than 3 months must be insured with one of the health insurance companies officially recognised by the Confederation. However, if a student already has a foreign health insurance, this may be recognised by the "Organe cantonal de contrôle" in cases where contracting a Swiss health insurance would impose a double financial burden on the student, and always providing that the foreign health insurance provides similar cover to the Swiss one. A request for exemption should be addressed to the Organe cantonal de contrôle de L'assurance-maladie et accidents (Ch. de Mornex 40 - 1014 Lausanne) and should be accompanied by a written attestation from the foreign health insurance company giving all the necessary information.

To obtain this exemption it is indispensable to comply with the following 2 conditions by having:

  • compulsory health insurance in the country of origin
  • identical coverage to that prescribed by the Swiss law on health insurance (LAMal)
