Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulation

Most students from outside Europe and the Nordic countries require a residence permit or visa in order to begin their studies in Sweden. You apply for both your visa and your residence permit at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country. The process of getting your residence permit may take up to 12 weeks, so make sure you apply as soon as you receive your letter of admission from the University of Gothenburg.

Note that you must be admitted to full-time studies worth at least 30 Higher Educational Credits (HECs) in order to meet the requirements for a residence permit.

Please refer to the Other Links section for the relevant links to consular/visa regulations.

Health/Medical Insurance

Before you leave your home country, you are advised to review your insurance coverage. Enquire with your regional social insurance office and your insurance company.

Please note that valid comprehensive health insurance may be one of the conditions for obtaining a residence permit.

Student IN

As an incoming exchange student at the University of Gothenburg, you are automatically covered by The Swedish State's Insurance for Foreign Students in Sweden, Student IN.

All students in Sweden are currently covered by the personal injury insurance (general student insurance) that is obtained on behalf of universities and colleges within the state insurance system by the Central Student Grants Committee. The insurance applies in Sweden during university hours and during travel to and from the location where university hours are spent.

Student IN is a form of accident insurance for all foreign exchange students carrying out university education or research education at a university or university college. An exchange student is a student studying or practising in Sweden in accordance with an agreement between a Swedish educational institution and a foreign educational institution.

The insurance applies during education time, for two weeks before studies start and for two weeks after studies end. The insurance applies 24 hours a day in Sweden.

This insurance does not apply if the insured party is entitled to compensation from another insurance policy. An accident that is covered by general student insurance will not be covered under this insurance

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the university’s insurance policies.
