The Department of Residence Affairs and Accommodation, fondly referred to as the TuksRes Family, is a stand-alone business unit, with various management teams serving residence students in 27 residences. It is preferable that students, who choose their study direction on a particular campus, select a residence on that campus, eg. Education students select a residence on a Groenkloof Campus. Remember to apply early, because there is only limited space available. Please refer to the Other Links section for the relevant links to university accommodation. |

Consular/Visa Regulation |
||||||||||||
Study permit Exchange students are requested to contact the nearest South African consular office in their home country, or neighbouring country to obtain a study permit. The student must use the letter of admission from the University of Pretoria to apply for study permits. It is the responsibility of the student to see to it that the South African consular office issues the correct permit with the correct endorsement. Apply for your study permit and await the outcome of your application, before departing for South Africa. The fact that you've been accepted by a South African educational institution does not guarantee that you'll be issued with a study permit. You cannot enter South Africa on a visitor's visa and then apply for a study permit. The holder of a study permit for studies at a higher education institution may conduct part-time work for a period not exceeding 20 hours per week during term and full-time when the University is closed. |

Health/Medical Insurance |
||||||||||||
It is compulsory for those who have a study permit to register with a South African registered medical aid. No exceptions will be allowed. The South African Consular Office may accept international medical insurance submitted by the student when applying for a study permit. However, international insurance is not accepted by the University of Pretoria. Failure to adhere to this stipulation will result in student being unable to register. The students are advised to contact BESTmed Medical Scheme or Momentum Health Plan (Ingwe option) to arrange cover prior their arrival in South Africa. Contact details for the two medical aid companies that we recommend are: Momentum Health Plan (Ingwe option) website: (www.ingwehealth.co.za), the contact person is Mr Joe Moabi (joe.moabi@momentum.co.za), or BESTmed: (www.bestmed.co.za), the contact person is Ms Connie Venter (conniev@sanlamhealth.co.za). |
