Accommodation
Housing Options

Due to changes to the New Zealand University environment, and a general shortage of accommodation in Wellington, there is an acute shortage of student accommodation at Victoria. It is particularly difficult to accommodate students in VUW’s Semester 1 (March intake) for a one semester exchange and there will be an additional levy of 10% on the university accommodation price to cover the increased administrative costs caused by five month contact and subsequent placement for the room.

Exchange students arriving in VUW’s Semester 2 only (July intake) have a much higher chance of securing university accommodation, provided they submit their accommodation application and application fee by the deadline.

Accommodation choices include Hall of Residence, homestays and private housing.

Please refer to the Other Links section for relevant links to the University’s accommodation.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulations

Exchange students must apply to New Zealand Immigration for a student visa and obtain the visa before entering New Zealand.  Please note that it is NOT possible for exchange students to travel to New Zealand on a visitor's visa and apply for a student permit upon arrival in New Zealand, even if you are a citizen of a country with which New Zealand has a visa waiver agreement. It is imperative that all exchange students get their student visa BEFORE travelling to New Zealand, as you may be refused a student permit if you apply from within New Zealand.

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to visa information.

Health/Medical Insurance

Exchange students are automatically signed up for the StudentSafe-University insurance policy, and pay for this upon enrolment at VUW. The estimated cost is NZ$292.50 per semester.

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to the University’s insurance policies.
