Accommodation
Housing Options

There were several accommodation options for international students - Residential Colleges or University managed flats. Accommodation options at the University of Otago are in high demand, particularly for the February intake. Students coming to Otago in the July intake will have more options, making this possibly a better start option for students coming to Otago for one semester only.

Please refer to the Other Links section for relevant links to University’s accommodation.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/ Visa Regulations

Exchange students must apply to New Zealand Immigration for a student visa and obtain the visa before entering New Zealand.  Please note that it is NOT possible for exchange students to travel to New Zealand on a visitor's visa and apply for a student permit upon arrival in New Zealand, even if you are a citizen of a country with which New Zealand has a visa waiver agreement. It is imperative that all exchange students get their student visa BEFORE travelling to New Zealand, as you may be refused a student permit if you apply from within New Zealand.

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links to visa information.

Health/ Medical Insurance

Exchange students are required to sign up for StudentSafe (Otago’s recommended insurance policy) as part of the online process. The estimated cost is NZ$292.50 per semester. Students wishing to have an alternative insurance policy assessed must apply up to 6 weeks before the start of their studies at Otago.
