The University of Otago, founded in 1869, is New Zealand's oldest university. Otago has earned an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching. The University was started to teach subjects in the field of Arts, Medicine, Law and Music. Although Otago has teaching facilities in each of the New Zealand’s main cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, its main campus is in Dunedin, in the South Island. The University has New Zealand's highest average research quality and in New Zealand is second only to the University of Auckland in the number of A rated academic researchers it employs. It topped the New Zealand Performance Based Research Fund evaluation in 2006. |

Curriculum Structure |

Exchange students are required to maintain a full time student status while at Otago. The minimum course load is 54 points per semester (equivalent to 3 courses). It is recommended that exchange students read 54-72 points per semester (3 or 4 courses). You will not be permitted to enroll in more than 4 courses per semester. The University of Otago offers a free course to new exchange students focusing on study, language and cultural skills. Limited number of place available. Students are encouraged to apply early. Housing Options |

There were several accommodation options for international students - Residential Colleges or University managed flats. Accommodation options at the University of Otago are in high demand, particularly for the February intake. Students coming to Otago in the July intake will have more options, making this possibly a better start option for students coming to Otago for one semester only. Exchange students are required to sign up for StudentSafe (Otago’s recommended insurance policy) as part of the online process. The estimated cost is NZ$292.50 per semester. Students wishing to have an alternative insurance policy assessed must apply up to 6 weeks before the start of their studies at Otago.
