The University of Tokyo, also known as "Todai" was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. As a leading research university, Todai offers courses inessentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conductsresearch across the full spectrum of academic activity. The university aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills.

Curriculum Structure |
|
Todai only accepts 3rd year students. Exchange students would be categoried as “Special Auditors” and credits would be awarded for coursework programmes. Exchange students can apply for language courses offered by the Center for Japanese Language Education (Note: No credit awarded)
Special auditors are expected to be enrolled at courses offered by the Faculty to which they originally belong at their home University. However, if it is necessary for students to register courses offered by other Faculties, it would be subject to approval.

|

Housing Options |
|
Exchange students may apply for university housing arranged by Todai. However, university housing is not guaranteed due to limited capacity. The host Faculty and Schools would contact accepted exchange students about housing application procedures.

Consular/Visa Regulations |
|
Exchange students must obtain a “College Student” visa with the “Certificate of Eligibility” which would be arranged and sent to you by Todai. It is recommended that you check the required supporting documents at the website before applying with the Japan Embassy with a valid passport and the Certificate of Eligibility.
|
|
Health/Medical Insurance |
|
All foreign nationals residing in Japan for more than one year must join a Japanese public medical insurance program. Students whose stay in Japan is less than one year, but have a “College Student” status of residence, may join the National Health Insurance program. Joining is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended for such students to join.
