Tohoku University was established in Sendai in 1907, it is the third oldest former Imperial University after Tokyo and Kyoto. Tohoku University is well known for its open and progressive polices. Thus Tohoku University is known for its strong orientation toward academic research. In the years following its establishment, Tohoku University has grown into an institution that includes the fields of medicine, science, and engineering. The courses are taught in the Japanese Language.
The university had 10 faculties and 15 graduate schools. The spirits of its foundation are based on 3 core values "Research First", "Transparency" and "Practice-Oriented Research and Education" principles.

Students are expected to complete 15 credit units (cu) per semester.

Medium of Instruction for Classes |
|
Japanese. Undergraduate Degrees taught in English at the undergraduate level include the International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course (IMAC-U), the Applied Marine Biology Course (AMB), and the Advanced Molecular Chemistry Course (AMC).

Housing Options |
|
In Sendai where Tohoku University locates, more than 520 rooms of accommodations including the Tohoku University International House and Sendai International House 1 and 2 ran by the Japan Student Services Organization are available for international students and researchers. However, most international students and researchers find private apartments. Thus, Tohoku University provides useful information about good residences and housing avasilable for international students and researchers.

Consular/Visa Regulations |
|
Applying for a college student visa requires a Certificate of Eligibility. This document is issued by the Japanese Ministry of Justice. The International Centre will apply for this Certificate on the student’s behalf, and send it to the student when it is issued. Apply at the Japanese Embassy with the Certificate and a valid passport.

Health/Medical Insurance |
|
All foreign nationals residing in Japan for more than one year must join a Japanese public medical insurance program. Students’ whose stay in Japan is less than one year, but have a “College Student” status of residence, may join the National Health Insurance program. Joining is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended for such students to join.
