By air: Dublin Airport, Belfast International Airport (Aldergrove), Cork Airport, Shannon Airport and Ireland West Airport (Knock) are the five main international airports in Ireland. Flight services to Great Britain and continental Europe are available in all five airports. There are smaller regional airports which only have flight connection services within Ireland or to Great Britain. Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Aer Arann and CityJet are some of the airlines which provide flight services in Ireland. Unless you’re flying from one end of the country to the other, say Berlin to Munich or Hamburg to Munich, planes are only marginally quicker than trains if you factor in the time it takes to get to and from the airports. Even the big carriers often have some very attractive fares, finally making domestic air travel a viable option By rail: The railway routes form an extensive network between the major towns and cities in Ireland, the mountains, ports and airports. Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) manages the long distance passenger trains which connect major towns and cities. In Dublin, The Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Luas provide the local rail network. By road: Motorists drive on the left, similar to that in Singapore, Hong Kong, Great Britain, Australia and Japan. Buses: The bus is a good alternative to rail as its service routes extend to places which are inaccessible by rail. It also tends to be cheaper. Special tickets of varying duration are available. Car-hire: All major international car-rental companies maintain branches at airports and major train stations, and in towns. Avis, Budget, Europcar and Hertz Public Transport : The best way to travel around Ireland is by car - no contest. But what if a visitor does not want or simply cannot use a car? There are alternatives available, none of them perfect, but a combination of road and rail travel is an interesting option. |
