Hungary

Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. The people are an amalgam of Magyars and various Slavic, Turkish, and Germanic peoples.

The Great Alfold (Great Hungarian Plain), with fertile agriculture land, occupies nearly half of the country. Hungary’s two most important rivers are the Danube and the Tisza. Lake Balaton, in the Transdanubian highlands, is the largest lake in central Europe. Forests cover nearly one-fifth of the land. Hungary is one of the more prosperous countries of eastern Europe and a major world producer of bauxite.

Hungary is also the birthplace of many innovative products such as the ball-point pen, vinyl record, electric train, Rubik cube and espresso coffee machine.

Dubbed as the “Little Paris on the Danube”, Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is a metropolis offering a blend of rich cultural heritage, western luxury and intricate yet often embittered history.  It is certainly a picturesque city with much to see and much to enjoy.

Currency

The unit of currency is Hungarian Forint (HUF). In Hungary the abbreviation of Forint is Ft.

Coins: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 HUF.
Bank notes: 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5’000, 10’000, 20’000 HUF. (Always check how many zeros you have there! E.g. don’t pay 20’000 instead of 2’000.)

Since February 2008, 1 and 2 forint coins are no longer used. However, in shops, the prices can still end in 1, 2, 3 etc. Prices are rounded off to the nearest multiple of 5. This means that you will only have to pay 310 HUF for something that costs 312 HUF. On the other hand, you will pay 420 HUF for something that costs 419 HUF. If you pay by credit card you will be charged the exact amount.
