Institutum Geometrico-Hydrotechnicum, the legal predecessor of Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) was founded in 1782, and it was the first institute in Europe to train engineers at university level. BME, as a prestigious Hungarian higher education institute is committed to differentiated, multilevel, high-standard education, founded on intensive basic training, research, development and innovation, and scientific qualification in technical and natural sciences and in certain fields of economic and social sciences. BME is the largest engineering school of Hungary with 6 engineering faculties, and Natural Science and Economics majors as well. |

Housing Options |

No dormitory due to limited places in student residences, apartments for rent are available in the city. Private accommodations (rented rooms, apartments) are available for $300- $400 per month depending on their location and level of comfort. (Price excluding electricity, heating and telephone costs) Ask for a brochure of the Private Accommodation Agency run by BME students in the first week of September in Bldg. Z, ground floor next to Students’ Office. |

As a non-EU citizen, prior to departing from your home country, you may need to obtain a D-5 visa at the closest Hungarian Embassy in your country. Due to current immigration regulations of our state you may face difficulties in obtaining your visa. It may take a few months. Please, contact immediately the closest Hungarian Consulate, and find out about most recent information, conditions and price of obtaining a D-5 visa. Health/Medical Insurance |

All foreign students must have a sufficient health insurance while studying at BME. New students should purchase insurance when they enroll and renew it at registration for each semester except for EU citizens, who are covered by their EU health insurance program. The insurance fee is approx. EUR 100 for a semester. The service includes medical consultation, emergency care, short hospitalization and certain medicines at a subsidized cost. Some services, however, do involve charges. It is advisable to inquire about the possible cost of a service in advance. At the beginning of the academic year, new students are obliged to have a medical check-up as a condition of the insurance. The staff of the Dean’s Office provides information on check-up arrangements during the registration period. New students must have a medical check-up at the beginning of the academic year in Hungary. This medical check-up serves as the basis of health insurance. BME accepts the Generali-Providencia or the European Health Insurance card only. |

An Orientation Programme will be held between 31st August and 2nd September, for newly enrolled 1st year and pre-courses students as well as for exchange, transfer, MSc or PhD students. The program includes introductory lectures, informal meetings with students and teachers, access to Internet and the library, a sport event and a sightseeing tour. |
