Institution Profile
 

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a leading comprehensive research university.   It has a total of 61 departments under the Faculty of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Science, Social Science and Law.  The spacious 134-hectare campus is Hong Kong’s largest university campus and offers an inspiring and ever-changing view of Tolo Harbour and the hills beyond.

CUHK has established 22 research institutes. As part of its strategic plan 2006, CUHK has identified five key areas of existing strengths for additional research investments in Chinese Studies, Biomedical Sciences, Information Sciences, Economics and Finance, and Geoinformation and Earth Sciences.

CUHK is the only university in Hong Kong with a college system. The constituent Colleges are: Chung Chi College, New Asia College, United College, Shaw College, Morningside College and S.H. Ho College. Each undergraduate student is associated with one of the six Colleges. Three Colleges will join the CUHK family in near future. They are C.W. Chu College, Wu Yee Sun College and Lee Woo Sing College. The Colleges are responsible for informal education and for academic and cultural activities for students. CUHK is committed to general education and whole-person development.

Curriculum Structure

Semester workload:

Exchange students must take a full load of courses i.e. minimum of 12 units and maximum of 18 units per semester (ie. approxmiately 4-6 courses as most of them carry 3 units.

Medium of Instruction for Classes

English.

Students are expected to be fluent in both written and spoken Chinese should you choose to pursue certain programs such as the Chinese Language & Culture.

Restrictions for Exchange Students

The courses offered by the following faculties are not available to exchange students:

Accommodation
Housing Options

All exchange students live in on-campus accommodation owned by the university and managed by CUHK staff.

 

  • Undergraduate students will share double or triple occupancy room with local students.

  •  While it may be possible for exchange students to live off-campus, students are advised that private housing in Hong Kong is very expensive. Short-term leases are also difficult to secure.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulations

All exchange students admitted must apply for a student visa through CUHK’s Office of Academic Links (OAL) before going to Hong Kong.

Health/Medical Insurance

Student should carry adequate accident and medical insurance coverage with provisions for emergency evacuation/rescuer’s expense and repatriation for both durations of studies in Hong Kong and travels within/outside Hong Kong.

The University Health Service provides free primary care facilities and clinical services to all local and international students.
