Institution Profile

The Humboldt University of Berlin is Berlin's oldest university, founded in 1810 as the University of Berlin by the liberal Prussian educational reformer and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt, whose university model has strongly influenced other European and Western universities. From 1828 it was known as the Frederick William University, later (unofficially) also as the Universität unter den Linden. In 1949, it changed its name to Humboldt-Universität in honour of both its founder Wilhelm and his brother, naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.

Accommodations
Housing Options

Exchange students on standard programmes may make a formal application for the preferential allocation of a place in a hall of residence ("Antrag auf bevorzugte Zuteilung eines Wohnheimplatzes"). It must be submitted to the International Office at Humboldt-Universität along with the application for studies at Humboldt.

Applications must be received by Humboldt-Universität before:

15 December       for the Summer Semester
15 May                   for the Winter Semester

In Berlin student halls of residence or dormitories are run by the Studentenwerk, the student welfare organization, rather than by the university. Halls of residence (Wohnheime) are located in various parts of the city and vary in standard and price (from € 130 to € 270 per month).

If the search for accommodation in Berlin was not successful before the arrival, staying in a student hotel or backpackers' hostel for a few days at a reasonable price is recommended. From there the search for accommodation can be continued.  Flat share opportunities advertised by students on notice boards in the university can be very helpful in the search.

Please refer to the Other Links Section for the relevant links for accommodation.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulation

Applicants from all other countries need a visa for studies in the Federal Republic of Germany. A tourist visa does not entitle the holder to register as a student. Information on current entry regulations and the application forms are available from the Auswärtiges Amt.

After prospective students have received the Letter of Admission (Zulassungsbescheid) or confirmation of admission on the basis of exchange programme, a visa application should be made without delay because the processing will take time. The visa section of a consulate or embassy will normally issue a visa after a prescribed period of three weeks and two days (Schweigefrist), provided no objection has been received from the Berlin Foreigners' Registration Office. This is the minimum period of time required for the processing of the application.

Health/Medical Insurance

All students are required to provide proof of health insurance cover when matriculating.

Every student on a course up to the 14th semester or up to the age of 30, is entitled to obtain health insurance cover from one of the recognized mandatory health insurance providers in Germany at a special student rate. As from 1 July 2009 the premium for health and nursing care is € 63.38 per month (or € 64.66 per month for a student over 23 years with no children).

If a student has private health insurance cover, a German mandatory insurance company may grant exemption from compulsory insurance cover in Germany. Once this option has been chosen, it will be irreversible until studies are completed.

Monthly health insurance premiums are put up moderately at regular intervals.

Humboldt-Universität has a partnership with two of the recognized mandatory health insurance providers, i.e. AOK and TK, which maintain special points of contact for students and are normally available when new students are matriculating. They can give advice and confirm mandatory health insurance cover, which is a requirement for matriculation.
