Freie Universität Berlin was founded in 1948 by professors and students, in response to the persecution faced by students who took a critical eye of the system at Universität Unter den Linden. The idea of founding a free university found widespread support in the international community, and helped pave the way for Freie Universität to become a university with an outstanding international reputation.
On 2007, Freie Universität is one of the nine German higher education institutions to have been successful in all three lines of funding in the Excellence Initiative jointly sponsored by the German federal government and the governments of the federal state.
Freie Universität is a full-spectrum university, comprising twelve departments and three Central Institutes that together offer more than 160 different academic programs in a broad range of disciplines.

Consular/Visa Regulations |
|
All foreign students (except nationals from EU/EFTA countries as well as from Australia, Canada, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Korea, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Switzerland, and USA) have to apply for a study visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken) at the German Embassy in their home country prior to studies in the Federal Republic of Germany. This may take at least 6 weeks to a few months so students are advised to start early.

Once students have been enrolled at FU Berlin, they must apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) within three months. Students from EU or EEA countries may apply for a so-called Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung. Students will be provided with detailed information and assistance upon arrival in Berlin.
