Getting Around

By air: Major domestic routes operate between all capital cities. The major domestic airlines are Air France, Airlinair and CCM

By rail: Trains are run by SNCF. They are excellent and speedy throughout the country, cover an extremely extensive network. Small towns without train stations are normally linked to the local station by bus.

The TGV is the high speed inter-city train service. There are also many night trains which travel more slowly than their counterparts in the day so you can go to sleep in one town and wake up in another

By road: Traffic drives on the right. Wide, well-maintained roads with little traffic run throughout most of rural France. Remember to keep some spare change to hand to pay for the tolls. France is well covered by an extensive network of highways linking most cities. In all major cities of France you can expect traffic jams weekdays at rush hour, from 7 to 9 in the morning, and from 5 to 7 in the evening, except Paris where congestion is omnipresent except at night and mid-summer.

Buses: There is no national bus system in France. This means that though you can travel regionally by bus in France, it is not possible to travel inter-regionally by bus.

Car-hire: Major international (Budget, Hertz) and some local car hire companies are available at all major airports and big hotels to those over 21 years old.

Public Transport : There are excellent bus services in Paris and other major cities in France, some of which also have trams or trolley buses. The town of Châteauroux (in Indre) recently became the first in France to offer free bus travel in order to persuade citizens to abandon their cars, and in Lille commuters are offered half-price bus travel.

However in rural areas buses are few and far between. Buses usually run early and late in the day with little or nothing in between, and may cease altogether during the long summer school holiday period (July and August). A city bus is generally called an autobus and a country bus a car or autocar. Smoking isn’t permitted on buses in France.
