TUT, founded in 1918 is the oldest and biggest university in Tallinn and the second largest in enrolment in Estonia. The University provides interdisciplinary higher education, innovation and technological development. TUT is the nation’s leading academic institution in engineering, business and public administration. TUT offers engineering and economics diplomas, and Bachelors, Masters and doctoral degree programmes with three languages of instruction: English, Estonian and Russian.

Curriculum Structure

Forms of tuition shall be classroom study, practical training, and independent work. Classroom study shall comprise lectures or seminars. The nominal study load per semester according to the curriculum shall be 30 European credit points (30 ECTS credits).

Most of the courses offered in English are on Master's level but as an exchange student you can participate in courses at any level (except in the School of Economics and Business Administration).

ECTS credit system is used in all TUT programmes. Semester workload for exchange students is 30ECTS with each credit corresponds to 60 hour work.

You are allowed to take courses in Estonian or Russian when you speak these languages.

NUS Application Deadline

NUS students must be nominated by NUS to be eligible to apply for fee-wavier exchange with Tallinn Institute of Technology. Please check with SEP Administrator in the Dean’s Office for actual dates.

Housing Options

For exchange students accommodation is offered in the Academic Hostel situated in the university campus

Double room rent:

160 EUR deposit
30 days: 144 EUR
31 days: 148.80 EUR

Alone in the double room (only, if there is room available!):

160 EUR deposit
30 days: 240 EUR
31 days: 248 EUR

The rent includes:

 
  • furniture (2 beds, 1 desk and office chair, wardrobe, TV)
  • electricity, heating and water
  • bed clothing (mattress, pillow, blanket and bed linen)
  • cleaning and change of bed linen once a week
  • WIFI in a lobby, wired internet (1 output) in rooms (you need your own laptop)


Student Home

Student Union of Tallinn University and Student Union of Tallinn University of Technology have started a project STUDENT HOME which aim is to arbitrate different living spaces outside universities’ dormitories for students in Tallinn. The website acts as a portal through which people can put up and respond to advertisements for accommodation.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulation

Please note that the application procedure for residence permit for students outside EU may take up to 2 months. Be sure to submit your application in time!

As a general rule an applicant should submit the application for a residence permit at a foreign representation of the Republic of Estonia.

Conditions and application procedure for the temporary residence permit for study in Estonia

Upon the application for a temporary residence permit for study in an educational institution located in Estonia the following documents must be submitted:

 
  • a standard application form;
  • an application form "Application for issue or extension of temporary residence permit";
  • the additional form “Data concerning close relatives, spouse, family members and dependants” ;
  • the additional form “Confirmation of educational institution or students organisation that the student will start studies in certain educational institution” (confirmation is valid for up to two months from the date of its issue);
  • a standard curriculum vitae (except if the applicant is under 15 year of age);
  • a document which certifies the legal income of the applicant or his/her family members, who ensure his/her subsistence, during the six months preceding the submission of the application, including the amount, regularity and sources of the income;
  • the identity document of an applicant;
  • a coloured photograph sized 40x50 mm;
  • an insurance contract;
  • a document certifying the payment of the state fee;
  • an applicant in the status of long-term resident of another EU Member State is required to prove such status upon applying for the residence permit.

Health/Medical Insurance

If you are a non-EU citizen you have to have an insurance contract for 2-3 months already on arrival guaranteeing that any costs related to your medical treatment as a result of illness or injury during the period of validity of the residence permit applied for will be met. An alien who has been granted a residence permit for study is not covered by Estonian health insurance. When you arrive to Estonia you would have to buy a new insurance contract which is equal to Estonian health insurance.
