Estonia
Estonia consists of a mainland area and some 1,500 islands and islets in the Baltic Sea. Having gone through numerous wars in history before gaining independence in 1991, Estonia is a country with a strong national identity. Estonians make up about two-thirds of the population. Russians account for almost one-fourth, and there are Ukrainian, Finnish, and Belarusian minorities.
Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is prominent for its medieval characteristics. Being the oldest city in northern Europe, old churches, historical buildings and monuments can be seen in the old town. Modernization has already spread its wings beneath the veil of its strong historic appearance. With the combination of bars, restaurants, cafes, its vibrant nightlife and its old town, Estonia has been successful in drawing tourists to visit for short breaks.
