Institution Profile

Founded in the second half of the 17th century, the University of Zagreb is the oldest Croatian university and one of the oldest universities in Europe. At that time the University of Zagreb encompassed three faculties: Theology, Law and Philosophy. In the years that followed new faculties were established and in the period between the two world wars, the number of the faculties had increased to seven. Since the Second World War up to the present, the University has intensively developed and embraced all areas of science and art.

The University officially opened a new campus on 12 October 2007 at Borongaj and it hosts the Centre for Croatian Studies, Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation and Faculty of Traffic Engineering, along with other faculties in the university. The University is also home to a sports centre, student residence hall and numerous institutes and agencies of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports. The Centre for Art Research will also be situated on Campus, in a former military warehouse adapted to accommodate its needs.

All applicants are supposed to respect the application deadlines of University of Zagreb, which is 10 May for semester 1 and a full academic year exchange and 10 November for semester 2 exchange. Application has to be done ONLINE and only completed application with supporting documents will be accepted.

NUS students must be nominated by NUS to go for fee-wavier exchange and are supposed to refer to your faculty for its own internal application deadlines which are usually earlier then the deadlines set by the partner university.

Accommodation
Housing Options

On-campus accommodation:

Only exchange students studying at the University of Zagreb are entitled to accommodation in the student residences. After your application has been successfully accepted by the University of Zagreb, the IRO office will send you a Housing Request Form. Exchange students will be accommodated in the Student Residence Hall Cvjetno naselje, Odranska 8, HR-10000 Zagreb. The student residence hall consists of 8 buildings, a student restaurant, coffee and pastry shop and a post office. All exchange students are accommodated in building number 8.

All rooms are on a twin-sharing basis (there is no option to stay in a single room). All rooms have a small kitchen (no refrigerator). The bathroom is shared with the next room. Cutlery and utensils are not provided. Students have to make payments for accommodation in building number 3. Payments are to be made in advance - during the first two weeks of each month students pay for the next month. All rooms have free Internet access. Internet instruction can be found on the following website.

Students who wish to live in one of the student residence halls are required to submit a confirmation stating that they have received TBC vaccination.

Off-campus accommodation:

For those who are not entitled to/assigned accommodation in the student residence hall (e.g. regular international students, guest students) it is necessary to look for alternatives such as private rental accommodation. Rents vary greatly according to location, room size, facility etc. Overhead expenses are sometimes included in the price, and sometimes are paid by the consumer. Payment is usually expected at the beginning of the month, while some landlords request payment for several months in advance. There are two ways to rent a flat in Zagreb. The first usually involves contacting real estate agencies in Zagreb through email. The second option would be to run an advertisement in a newspaper classified advertisements section. Student hostels could suffice during the period of property search.

Visa & Insurance
Consular/Visa Regulations

Visa

The list of countries whose nationals need a visa to enter the Republic of Croatia can be found at the web pages of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. Foreigners can apply for a visa at the nearest Croatian Embassy, Consular or Diplomatic Mission in their home country. Based on Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ information, students holding Singapore passport do not need to apply for enter visa to Croatia,

Temporary Stay Permit

Students who are not obliged to possess a visa to enter the Republic of Croatia may stay in Croatia for a maximum of 90 days within a period of 6 months, starting from the day of their first entry.

Exchange students should regulate their temporary stay permits upon their arrival to Zagreb, with the University of Zagreb’s assistance. For regulating the temporary stay permit, students need to have a written confirmation from Croatia’s Ministry of Education before filing the documents for temporary residence permit in Ministry of internal Affairs in Croatia. Similarly, University of Zagreb will be able to help NUS students in getting the written confirmation.

Students need to bring all supporting documents with them, including a completed non-criminal record named “Certificate of Good Record” as it is hard to get remotely. The form is available here. Students have to get it legalized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and send it to Croatia’s embassy in Jakarta to get it stamped.

Within one month upon the arrival students need to report at the Central Police Station in Petrinjska 30, HR-10 000 Zagreb to confirm their stay permit. For that, students will need a copy of the passport and the form filled in the student residence hall upon the arrival.

Health/Medical Insurance

All foreign students must have health insurance during their stay in Croatia. The best option is to enrol in an insurance plan from your home country that covers your stay in Croatia.

A health insurance policy with the Croatian Health Institute costs 400HRK (EUR 54) per month and entitles the student to full healthcare coverage.

Students who wish to live in one of the student residence halls are required to submit a confirmation stating that they have received TBC vaccination.
